"Le Sire de Vergy" was a parody operetta based on a medieval romance that the authors mocked and perverted for full comic value. Performed at the Théâtre des Variétés, the script was by the brilliant team of Robert de Flers and Caillavet. The music was composed by Claude Terrasse, a talented young composer who was connected to the nabis through marriage to Pierre Bonnard's sister, and is primarily remembered for composing the music for Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi. The cast was an exceptional assemblage of talent, and the poster was executed magnificently by Barrére. Using his trademark flat, vivid colors Barrére depicts a line-up of the stars on stage. His great caricatures (here in such large format) were enough for the people of Paris to identify the famous performers, who included Brasseur, Max Dearly, Eve Lavalliere (performing an Egyptian-style belly dance), Prince and others.
